Feast of First Fruits / Bikkurim

Celebrated for one day, the day after the great Sabbath (Unleavened Bread), the 16th day of Abib / Nisan

Lev 23:9 – 11And יהוה spoke to Mosheh, saying,Speak to the children of Yisra’ĕl (we are grafted into Yisra’el when we accept the Messiah and obey the instructions [Torah] of YHWH), and you shall say to them, ‘When you come into the land which I give you, and shall reap its harvest, then you shall bring a sheaf of the first-fruits of your harvest to the priest. And he shall wave the sheaf before יהוה, for your acceptance. On the morrow after the Sabbath the priest waves it.

The Festival of the First Fruits takes place on the third day of the Passover. Read Leviticus 23:9-16 carefully. A sheaf of the first grain of barley that has been harvested, has to be waved by the priest, before YHWH, so that the rest of the harvest may be blessed.

According to Ex 23:15, 16 the instruction given by YHWH was definite and strong: “Guard the Festival of Unleavened Bread…..– and do not appear before Me empty-handed”

To have a clear understanding of this, we first need to look at the meaning of first-fruits.

What are the First Fruits?

  • The first:

It is the choicest, the foremost, the best., the pre-eminent of all that was to follow.

Ez 48:14for it is set-apart to יהוה.”

Rom 11:16Now if the first-fruit is set-apart, the lump is also.”

  • It is not a tenth or offering:

Neh. 12:44And on that day some were appointed over the rooms for the stores, for the contributions, for the first-fruits, and for tithes…”

  • Our first-fruits honour YHWH

Pro 3:9 Esteem יהוה with your goods, And with the first-fruits of all your increase”

  • It makes provision for us

Pro 3:10  ‘Then your storehouses shall be filled with plenty, And your vats overflow with new wine.”

  • In giving our first-fruits, we are blessed

Eze 44:30 And the first of all the first-fruits of all, and every contribution of all, of all your contributions, belong to the priests. And the first of your ground meal you give to the priest, so that a blessing rests on your house.”

  • We are a type of first-fruits

Jas 1:18 Having purposed it, He brought us forth by the Word of truth, for us to be a kind of first-fruits of His creatures.”

Yeshua as the First Fruits of The Father

Yeshua is the first born of the Father, the beginning of creation. He is also the first born of Myriam (Mary). He is the pre-eminent One (Col 1:18)

In the Fest of First Fruits we celebrate Him as the Sheaf of First Fruits, the First Fruits of the resurrected ones. He was the first to be resurrected and blessed by the Father for a greater harvest of resurrected ones to come. Hallelu’Yah!

1Co 15:20-23 But now Messiah has been raised from the dead, and has become the first-fruit of those having fallen asleep. For since death is through a man, resurrection of the dead is also through a Man. For as all die in Aḏam, so also all shall be made alive in Messiah . And each in his own order: Messiah the first-fruits, then those who are of Messiah at His coming

Firstfruits is prophetic of the resurrection of Messiah.

Yeshua celebrated the Festival of First Fruits by offering Himself as the first-fruit to all future generations – for a bigger harvest to come.

Yeshua rose from the grave on the third day in fulfilment also of His promise given in:

Mat 12:40  “For as Yonah was three days and three nights in the stomach of the great fish, so shall the Son of Aḏam be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.

This Festival brings us to a conclusion of the Pesach (Passover) celebrations, which was YHWH’s appointed time with mankind for the death, burial and resurrection of Yeshua, which was fulfilled by Yeshua according to the pattern and on time!
